Joining the cycling shorts trend (and how I like to style them)

One trend I never thought I would join is cycling shorts. Despite their popularity over the past couple of years, especially amongst celebrities like the Kardashians, its not been something I thought would suit me or that I needed to be a part of.

However, after seeing a couple of my favourite influencers wearing them on Instagram late last year, I knew I had to give them a go outside of the gym or off my bike!

What is clear is that cylcing shorts have become so much more than a piece of activewear. They are a must have (never thought I’d say that) in your wardrobe that can be styled up and down, adaptable for any occasion. They are also a great alternative to leggings in the warmer months of the year and even well into autumn and early in spring.

I found that they are so versatile you can style them in so many ways. They really are an essential for a style lovers wardrobe.

My pair of shorts is from my favourite British high street brand, All Saints

My top four ways to style cycle shorts
Oversized and vintage t-shirts

Keep it casual and relaxed – the shorts look especially good with an oversized tee that you can tuck in at the front or just want to leave it out. I have a couple of t-shirts that are long enough to wear as a dress and they are my go to ones for this outfit. Finish the outfit off with some oversized black sunglasses, and combat boots or chunky trainers.

Here is a link to my recent post on styling oversized t-shirts.

Raise the barrier to make them smarter with a blazer for ultimate effortless chic style. Two ways to wear with a blazer are open with a nice top underneath, or alternatively open or closed with your favourite black bra. Finish the outfit off with some healed boots or shoes. Sandals are also a great option. Alternatively you could make this outfit more casual with trainers or combat boots. For me in summertime this means wearing my Balenciaga ankle boots with them.

Shirt – anyway you like

For an option that keeps them between smart and casual wear the shorts with a classic white shirt. For something a bit longer that covers your bum an oversized shirt or blouse. Both options gives you an easy and ready to go outfit for a smart-casual dress code.

Chunky Knits

Like with my leggings I wear in winter the cycling shorts look fabulous with a big chunky knit.  You can wear them with some knee high boots for that ultimate casual but chic autumn and winter look. Again I would wear them with a pair of oversized black sunnies.
